Why Title Tags are Important for SEO
Title tags are important for search engine optimization (SEO) to be most effective.
At the same time, your pages can show up in Google without you writing the the tags at all (though we don’t recommend it).
Scratching your head?
Not to worry. I’m going to explain why these meta tags are still a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to SEO.
Why are Title Tags Important?
Meta title tags are responsible for telling users and search engines what to expect from website pages. It’s the first text users see on search engine results pages, and it’s also visible in web browsers and social networks. When done correctly, title tags can be the reason users click on certain links.
Here are examples of where you can find these tags in the wild:
Search Engine Results Pages
Web Browsers
Social Networks
Great, so now you know where titles can show up online, but why does it matter for SEO?
First, title tags remain an SEO ranking factor. In other words, search engines do look at these tags when crawling your web pages, to help them learn what your page is about.
Second, when your tags are written well, they can increase the number of clicks on your links. The more clicks you get on a link, the more traffic you have to your website page and the more relevant your web page appears to search engines.
Google and Bing, for example, view relevancy as an important factor when ranking website pages, so the more real estate you have for tags, the better off you are in terms of SEO performance.
